The Catechism

"As a Catholic Christian, probably and arguably the most important book apart from the Bible that you can possibly get your hands on is actually a collection of writings, and that collection of writings is called The Catechism of the Catholic Church". (Marcel Dion)

The Second Most Important Book

Forgive the cliché, but the Catechism of the Catholic Church is just plain AWESOME!  According to a bishop friend of ours, it is also one of the most significant Church documents in over 400 years! Think of that for a moment!

First published in Latin and then in French, Linda and I had to wait five years for the English translation. To this day we recall the excitement and incredible anticipation the entire faith community in Ottawa felt as we awaited that English translation. In the United States alone 250,000 copies had been pre-ordered before its release! Over 8 million copies have been sold since.

The entire project was overseen by the brilliant Cardinal Ratzinger (later to become Pope Benedict XVI). In reminiscing about those days he said, "I must confess that even today it seems a miracle to me that this project was ultimately successful". He was right. It was a miracle! A miracle that continues to impart grace and revelation to all those who drink of its waters of life and truth!

Thanks to this providential gift there no longer is either reason or excuse for confusion among any of the baptized. Its very existence was born out of that need and desire; to dispel any and all confusion among the faithful. And it can do just that. And if there is one thing that the Church needs right now, it is clarity of faith and belief in the midst of unprecedented confusion. Linda and I consider the Catechism a blessing of immeasurable worth.

Do you have a question about a faith related matter? Go to the Catechism! Do you know any non or lapsed Catholics who have peculiar notions about what the Church teaches? Go to the Catechism! Are you in a season of aridity in your prayer life? Go to the Catechism (especially section four)! Are you longing for a deeper grasp of the immensity of the God we believe in? Go to the Catechism! Are you being convicted to "return to your first love" (Rev 2:1-7)? Go to the Catechism! An abundance of revelation, inspiration and truth await you.

If you don’t have your own copy of the Catechism, say a quick, joyful prayer of repentance and get your hands on one as soon as possible. The Holy Spirit, who "awakens faith" (CCC 684), "enables communication with Christ" (CCC 683), "grants gifts to all" (CCC 2003) "helps man grow in spiritual freedom" (CCC 1742)is the "master and source of prayer" (CCC 741, 2652) and "reveals God" (CCC  687), awaits you to guide you into all truth (CCC 692)!

If you already have your own copy, BRAVO! You probably have discovered what a treasure and fabulous companion it is to your bible.

The posts you’ll find below are here to help you dive into this "gold mine" of our faith. They feature quotes that are some our personal favourites.

Finally, we encourage you to share these posts with others. In doing so you share in our mission to encourage and equip the faithful to "put out into the deep" (Luke 5:4), thereby building up the Kingdom of God and giving glory to His mighty name!
