I've Had a Dream...Now what?

Once we've been given a dream, there are two basic steps to follow that will help us remember these dreams and interpret them more accurately.  Since so many of these night parables are actual help from God, we really do honour the Lord by showing Him that we take His help seriously.

The first thing to do then is to write the dream down as soon as possible.  If we wait too long after we wake up, we will often forget the dream altogether or forget some important element. Dreams do have a tendency to fade away over time. Having a dream journal, apart from your daily journal, is a good idea because it gives you more room for writing, drawings, pictures and diagrams (i.e. to ponder and pray into your dreams).

For example, I have a separate dream journal in which I record the entirety of my dreams along with any drawings and diagrams. This is also where I write down my interpretations. These journals (I'm now on my 4th) are amongst my most prized possessions because they speak to me of my Heavenly Father's goodness and faithfulness who sends me the guidance and information that I need to keep walking forward in my calling and mission while here on earth.

I also happen to have a daily journal where I write down what I hear from God or scriptures that speak into my present situations.  In this particular daily journal, I write the title only of my dream and the date on which I received it.

God inserts dreams into the daily fabric of our lives to guide us in our decisions, to give revelations about relationships, situations at home or at work or to help us see events from a different angle and so forth. So when I re-read the entries in my daily journal, I see the title of my dream and the date on which I received it, which enables me to perceive how the dream fits into what was going on at that time in my life.  This practice will often release more insight into the meaning of my dreams, especially when I have a look back.  It can often release those wonderful "aha" moments and help me understand what God was doing at that point in my life.  This in turn helps me trust Him more in my present and future situations, knowing that I will never be left to my own devices.

I have found that those who take the time to write down their dreams will usually experience an increase of these heavenly messages, which reminds me of Jesus who said; "to those who have, more will be given".   â€‹

Once we've written down the dream, the second most important thing we do is to ask the Holy Spirit to help us decipher the message sent. This step is truly key to obtaining an accurate interpretation.  There is definitely acquired skill needed in dream interpretation therefore it's a good thing to pursue our study of it, but it is the Holy Spirit who breathes life upon all revelation.  Our studies may bring understanding about all the different elements and symbols in a dream, but it's the Holy Spirit who will reveal to us how all these symbols come together to impart wisdom, knowledge, help and guidance through the "story" that they tell.

There is also one more thing the Holy Spirit will help us with and it's actually quite important.  He is the One who will grant us the revelation to properly apply our dream to the specific area of our life that God wishes to highlight. Personally, I find this the most difficult step in the process.  I'm not always sure which aspect of my life the dream is referencing; it could be the apostolate, my life at home, our marriage, a relationship, it could be something in my past or something that is to come.  This is where "waiting on the Lord" is crucial so that we don't move ahead too quickly in making a decision based on an incomplete understanding of the dream's application.  As always, prayer is key.

Esther - Preliminaries - verse 11

On awakening from this dream and vision of God's designs, Mordecai thought deeply about the matter, trying his best all day to discover what its meaning might be.
